Liposuction is not usually recommended purely for weight loss, but can work very well for people who just have fatty deposits or bulges that can’t be lost through exercise and diet.
Liposuction is a very common plastic surgery procedure that improves a person's body shape by removing excess fatty deposits.
There is usually a high level of patient satisfaction associated with this procedure.
Dr Sellars would have at least 2 consultations with the patient to determine their concerns and objectives, and to ensure they have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with liposuction.
Dr Sellars will explain in detail the procedure, and show before and after photos of other people who have had this surgery.
He will discuss risk factors, potential complications of surgery and explain the recovery period for liposuction.
This procedure can be usually be performed as a day only procedure, or you can stay in hospital 1-2 days if necessary.
Liposuction usually requires a general anaesthetic.
Liposuction involves inserting a small suction cannula under the skin into the fat layer, to extract fatty deposits.
Depending on where the surgery is to take place on the body, will determine how many small incisions are to be made. A cannula with suction attached is inserted into these incisions and pushed backwards and forwards across the fat tissue and then the fat is sucked up the cannula.
Up to 5 litres of fat can be extracted safely in one procedure.
Liposuction can achieve great results in areas such as the flanks, hips (love handles), and inner and outer thighs. Liposuction can also be used to reduce fatty deposits over the upper and lower abdomen and also in gynaecomastia (male breasts).
Dr Sellars will apply a pressure garment over the surgical site to hold dressings in place and to also maintain pressure on the body to reduce swelling and bleeding.
While the dressings will be changed or replaced, the pressure garments are to be kept on for several weeks while the healing process takes place.
You will experience mild to moderate discomfort for a few days, and Dr Sellars will prescribe medication for this if required.
Please note, though, you must avoid medication with aspirin in it, as this can thin the blood and cause bleeding.
